Mantinjada (folk instrumental song)

A festive song for maestoso instrumental performance only, a summons to the bride to come out to the wedding. At the third time it was played, the bride with her guests would come out of the house, and the rite of the wedding could start. This custom has remained on the island of Krk to this day. The sopela players today play the mantinjada on other festive occasions, at cultural events of the town. The word mantinjada is of Romance origin and means a morning song, mattinata. But it also has a second meaning, suggesting following or accompanying a person or event— mantenere.
